Chapter 10

The days continued in their familiar rhythm, but a gentle new warmth had slowly begun to bloom in my otherwise quiet life.

Amrita and little Vansh had become a constant, comforting presence. What started as simple thank-you messages on WhatsApp had grown into daily conversations. We shared small updates about our days, funny stories, and even a few video calls where Vansh would excitedly show me his drawings or tell me about his day at school.

For the first time in many years, I felt an instant, genuine connection with someone. They were so real, so kind, without any judgment or hidden expectations. It felt like discovering a small, loving family I never knew I needed.

After weeks of gentle persistence from Amrita — and many polite refusals from my side — I finally agreed to have dinner at her home.

On that Saturday evening, I stood quietly in front of my small mirror. I kept my outfit simple: a soft white shirt paired with comfortable blue jeans and black shoes. I slung my small purse over my shoulder and took one last look at myself, adjusting my hair slightly.

My phone buzzed. It was Amrita.

Amrita: My driver is ready whenever you are! Just say the word 😊

Me: Thank you, but there’s really no need. I’ll come on my own.

Amrita: You’re too stubborn, Diya! Fine… but please come soon. I can’t wait any longer. Vansh has been asking about you all day. He even made a special drawing for his favorite Didi!

I smiled softly at the message and booked a cab. I shared the address with the driver and settled into the back seat, watching the city lights slowly fade as we drove toward the outskirts.

The driver glanced at the address on his screen, then looked at me through the rearview mirror with a puzzled expression. “Ma’am… are you sure this is the correct address?”

“Yes,” I replied, slightly confused. “Why do you ask?”

He paused for a moment. “Nothing, ma’am. Just confirming.”

I shrugged it off and continued looking out the window. But as the cab drove further into a quieter, more upscale area with wider roads and taller compound walls, a strange feeling settled in my stomach.

When the car finally stopped, I paid the driver and stepped out. My breath caught in my throat.

The place in front of me didn’t look like a house — it looked like a grand palace or a luxurious estate. Vast, perfectly manicured lawns stretched endlessly into the distance. Elegant fountains glowed under soft lighting, and the main building seemed to go on forever, with beautiful architecture and multiple wings. Heavily armed security guards stood at the grand entrance gates, their presence imposing and intimidating.

Is this some kind of joke? I thought, my heart beating faster. I quickly dialed Amrita’s number, my fingers slightly shaky.

“Amrita… where are you?” I asked, my voice uncertain. “I’m standing outside. This place… it looks unreal. Are you sure I have the right address?”

“What? You’re still outside?” she exclaimed, sounding surprised and a little panicked. “I strictly told the guards to bring you in immediately! Wait right there — I’m coming right now!”

Within a minute, I saw Amrita running toward me at full speed, her long hair flying behind her. The moment she reached me, she threw herself into my arms with such force that we both tumbled backward onto the soft grass.

“Ouch!” I groaned, half-laughing, half-winded. “Amrita! Get up, you crazy girl. You’re hugging me like a koala!”

She was still clinging tightly to me, grinning from ear to ear. “I can’t believe you’re finally here! I ran so fast — my heart is still racing!”

With some effort, I managed to sit up, pulling her with me. I brushed the grass off my jeans and took a deep breath. “Calm down a little. Are you sure you live here? I mean… this place looks like a castle. I was actually scared when I saw the guards with weapons. I thought I had the wrong address.”

Amrita laughed brightly as she helped me stand up. “Oh, I forgot to properly tell you about all this. I didn’t want to scare you away! Come, come inside! Vansh is eagerly waiting for you. He’s been jumping around like a little rabbit ever since he heard Didi was coming. He even made a special drawing for you this morning.”

She linked her arm with mine and started walking toward the grand entrance, still chatting excitedly. “I’m so happy you came, Diya. I know you’re always so busy with work and everything, but I really wanted you to meet everyone properly. Vansh talks about you all the time — ‘Didi this, Didi that.’ You’ve become his favorite person.”

I smiled softly, still overwhelmed by the surroundings. “He’s such a sweetheart. I’m glad I could come. But seriously… this place is huge. Do you really live here alone with Vansh?”

Amrita grinned mischievously. “Not exactly alone. But I’ll tell you everything inside. First, let’s get you comfortable. You must be tired after that long cab ride.”

My heart felt strangely light despite the overwhelming luxury surrounding me. For the first time in a long while, I was stepping into a place that felt warm — not just because of its beauty, but because of the genuine people waiting inside.
